Hello again from the craziness I call life...
I told myself over and over I was going to keep up on this blog, and alas, it has fallen by the wayside. So this is my attempt to update you on all things Prewitt.
We have moved (insert your song version of "Movin' On Up")! The Prewitts have started renting a home near Pine Street school (not to mention right next door to the Yuhaszs :) ). This is our last move for a VERY long time...hopefully, but if God calls us to go and do other things, I am totally up for it. The boys are doing well, both growing into their own personalities and acting more and more like typical brothers would. They are doing very well in their schools and seem to be enjoying themselves (especially when they are picking on each other...arrrg!)
This brings me to my topic...supplemental schooling :) I hear all of your brains wondering "what is that?" At the beginning of the school year I really struggled with whether to send Killian to preschool or to home school him this year. The pros and cons were both compelling (oohh, big word used correctly in a sentence...sorry, it was something shiney), I would be giving up a lot of free time, but it also felt like something God was calling me to do. I was very nervous about it, so I decided to put Killian preschool part time and do some home schooling on his off days at school. I must say, he loves it! He loves the quality time with mom and truly loves learning! I can definitely say that it has worked out wonderfully!
In fact, Killian loves his home schooling so much that today we are going to re-organize the toy room and make it a school room by day and a toy room by night (I am going to have drawers and other things to hide the toys...just so we don't get distracted). Right now, on a normal day, he will spend two to three hours on schooling (be it worksheets, cutting, coloring, crafting, being read to, or dramatic playing) and then be begging me to learn more. I want him to have a space to learn and be able to concentrate on what he's doing, or if we do a project, I want him to be able to keep it out and not have it be ruined. I am very excited about his willingness to learn and hope that I can start adding in stories from the Bible and character qualities (without overloading him too much...LOL!). It also helps that his preschool sends home a monthly calendar to tell me what he is learning, so I can supplement what he's missing at school and he can go the next day without missing hardly anything!
Don't get me wrong, I am not spending a ton of time with him doing this, preschool is supposed to be about having fun and learning through play. We probably do about two hours a day (on and off) two days a week and it seems to do him just fine. It gives him enough structure to not completely lose everything he's learning, but it's not too much where he feels overwhelmed.
Liem also does some extra "fun" schooling after school. His has to do more with Bible stories and character qualities. For him I want to make sure he's not doing a ton of sitting (since that's what he's done all day) and it's things that they don't really hit at school. He really enjoys getting to make puppets of the Bible characters and acting out the Bible story or getting candy for reciting his memory verse for the day. When the boys show a character quality that we have been working on, usually praise and love are given for rewards...they seem to respond best to that :)
We are still trying to work out some sort of system for all of it. I would like to work up to a big prize (going out to dinner, a special trip to a museum...something) for completion of all of it...but again, just batting ideas around in my head.
Sorry that this blog doesn't have the normal "witty humor" that my others usually have, but I could have typed a book on this, and I am sure I have already bored you enough :)
Have a wonderful day,
Jen
